Corporate life can be a harrowing ordeal at times. The unrelenting work pressure, heavy work demands, and arduously long work hours associated with a corporate life can affect even the best of us. Here are 22 work rules that you should follow for a happy life both in the workplace and away from it -

1. Respect everyone but don’t trust blindly.

Respect everyone in the office, but never believe or trust anyone blindly. Many a time, we end up in trouble for trusting people without thinking twice. So, try to keep your relationships formal and avoid putting your trust in people at work. After all, you don't know who might end up deceiving you for their own interest.

2. Keep office gossips in the office.

Avoid sharing your family matters with your colleagues, and similarly, don't take office gossips to your home. Sharing personal things with your colleagues can cause people to judge you. And in the same way, sharing everything that happens in the office with your family and friends can create unwanted problems and complications.

3. Be punctual in arriving and leaving.

Make it a point to be punctual in terms of arriving at and leaving from work. Coming to work on time daily will create a good impression of you among your peers and superiors. Whereas, leaving at the right time will make sure you have enough time for yourself and your family.

4. No romance in the office.

A workplace is a place where people interact and work with people of common interests and skills. Inevitably, numerous friendships are made at work, some of which may last a lifetime. But, it is important to avoid letting friendships develop into romantic relationships, as office romances can threaten your job and even ruin your career.

5. Never expect anything.

Do not expect anyone to do you a favor at work and take care of your tasks on your own. Also, always give your best effort at work without keeping any expectations or conditions. Practicing this in every aspect of your life is guaranteed to keep you happy always.

6. Never rush For a promotion.

Life is a journey of endless learning. Don't make a promotion or raise your primary concern at work. Doing so will never satisfy you, and you will always just want more and more. Keep learning new skills and honing your existing ones, and who knows, the next promotion may be just around the corner.

7. Don’t stress over office matters at home.

Don't stress over office issues outside the workplace. There are lots of better things to do other than that. Keep office matters confined to the workplace and do not waste time on them away from work. Time is the most valuable resource, so make full use of it.

8. Avoid taking things personally.

Avoid taking things like arguments, negative appraisals, or negative comments personally. Taking such things on your ego will have a bad effect on your peace of mind. So, never let these things have an effect on your life and happiness.

9. How people treat you is none of your concern.

If you feel you are treated unfairly or unjustly by someone at work, don't take it seriously or personally. Try to make things right by talking to that person, and even then, if things don't resolve, just stop giving any importance to that person. Don't take such things at heart and just focus on the more important things at work.

10. Family above everything else.

The only things that matter are your family members. Never let problems at work come in between you and your family. Always give your full attention to your family as they are the ones who stand beside you through thick and thin.

11. Avoid being sedentary at work.

Don't stay fixated on your desks for long periods. Sitting on your chair and staring at your computer screen for long can cause back pain, neck pain and also affect your mental wellbeing. So, take a break, move around, or go for a walk now and then.

12. Don't waste time comparing yourself to others.

Always remember that everyone is uniquely unique in their way. Don't compare yourself to others at work. You don't know what hardships a person has been through to get to the position he is in today. So, don't compare yourself with co-workers and have complete faith in your ability

13. Know your abilities and your limits.

Know what you are capable of, and always believe in your ability at work. Similarly, it is vital to know your limitations and boundaries to don't bite off more than you can chew. Also, never let any situation at work violate your integrity and principles.

14. Don't overcommit.

Draw a fine line between commitment and overcommitment at work. Overcommitting yourself at work will leave you with no personal time and take a toll on your health. Also, never take up tasks and responsibilities that you cannot complete. Doing so will only create a bad image of you among your co-workers.

15. Learn to laugh at your mistakes.

Take things lightly at work and never take anything so seriously that it affects your peace of mind. Practice the ability to laugh at your mistakes and errors. Laugh at something rather than taking it seriously. Doing so can prevent a small problem from becoming a major one.

16. Hate and Anger are big no-nos.

Anger and hate are two things that only bring harm and negativity in life and significantly impact mental well-being. Avoid these two as much as you can. If you have some dispute with anyone, try to resolve it and forgive and forget instead of harboring hate and anger.

17. Scrap the past. Embrace the present.

Let go of past mistakes in your life and move on with what is at hand in the present. Dwelling in the past will keep you away from the good things your life has to offer. Instead, think about how you can do things better in the present and in the future.

18. Don’t prioritize arguments.

Don’t give importance to arguments that may happen at work. It doesn’t matter what an argument is about and who “wins” it. That being said, avoid disputes whenever you can and never be adamant about proving your point right. Sometimes, it’s better to stay silent than watch an argument go out of control and cause serious consequences.

19. You are in control of your happiness.

Always remember that you are the only one who has authority over your own happiness. So keep in mind the saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and make the best out of every situation at work.

20. Laugh and Smile more.

You must have heard people saying that laughter is the best medicine in the world. Smiling and laughing can help lighten up your day with more joy and make those unbearable days far more bearable. Moreover, smiling and laughing are both contagious and can spread happiness to others as well.

21. Keep your workspace clean and organized.

Your work environment plays an important role in determining your mood at work and in general. A clean and organized workspace can make you more productive, keep you stress-free, and away from various diseases and health problems. So, keep your workspace spick and span if it isn’t already.

22. Always be positive.

Always be positive about everything and have a positive mentality at work. If you are going through tough times, remember that nothing is permanent and that everything changes eventually. So, never lose hope and sulk in tough situations. Keep working hard, and soon your efforts will be paid off!
